A single dad is seeking advice after sharing how the parents of his daughter’s friend asked to ‘inspect’ his house before allowing their daughter to attend a sleepover

Parenting isn’t easy – especially when you’re doing it on your own. That’s exactly what one single dad came to learn while trying to raise his daughter without her mum in the picture. He has come up against an ‘unexpected’ obstacle that might prevent his daughter from experiencing a sweet part of childhood – and it’s all because he’s a man.

Taking to Reddit, he asked: “My daughter wants a friend over for a sleepover. The parents of the other child want to come over to my place to ‘do a full inspection’. Is this normal?” While he doesn’t have anything to hide, he doesn’t want strangers snooping around his house expressing their judgment over how he lives.

Offering their advice and support, other single dads claim ‘it isn’t normal but it’s reality’, saying they’ve experienced a similar issue with their own daughters. One user said: “No it’s not normal, possibly because you’re a single dad. The parents should just say ‘sorry we don’t allow our kids to have sleepovers’ instead of having an intrusive nosey to check that you’re not living in a crack den.”

A second user said: “I was raised by a single dad and he was strict about no sleepovers at ours. He said he didn’t want to put other parents in an uncomfortable position by even asking etc. it’s unfair that people judge but better safe than sorry when it comes to children.”

However, another user claims it’s normal for a parent to want to know where their child will be spending the night – and they’d request a visit whether it was a single mum, dad, or married parents. They said: “It’s normal to want to see where your kid will be spending the night especially if they’ve never been over before, but the way she’s gone about it is really odd. It would have been better for her to ask if it’s ok to come over for a cuppa whilst the girls play, rather than straight up saying she wants to vet you first.”
