There are some simple steps you can take to improve your sleep on holiday this summer

With the summer holidays underway and warmer weather finally here, sunny staycations, city breaks and beach holidays will be on the cards for many people in the coming weeks.

But while there’s nothing better than getting a bit of sun, sea and sand, there’s one thing on holiday that doesn’t always go to plan – sleep.

One in 10 Brits can’t get a good night’s sleep while on holiday, with a new survey commissioned by MUJI revealing that a staggering 45 per cent of us return from a holiday feeling like we ‘need another break’.

Unsurprisingly, the survey found that temperature, noise and uncomfortable beds are the main culprits for our holiday sleep woes, but luckily, there are some simple steps you can take to help improve your slumber this summer.

Dr Neil Stanley, sleep expert and former Chairman of the British Sleep Society, said: “As Brits only enjoy one or two holidays on average per year, it’s extremely important to prioritise full rest and maximise good sleep in order to avoid burnout and maintain wellbeing throughout the rest of the year.

“Lack of quality sleep is a key reason why Brits feel they pick the wrong holiday destination and need another break straight after returning home.”

If you know you struggle to sleep in the heat, or if you’re travelling with children or an elderly relative, Dr Neil suggests considering locations that have a similar climate to the UK. Luckily, with ‘coolcations’ trending this summer, there are plenty of more temperate destinations to choose from, including Copenhagen, Tromso and Reykjavic.

It’s not just heat causing holiday insomnia, however. Noise can be very disruptive for Brits when trying to fall asleep, particularly those who are used to a quieter environment at night.

The solution? Do your research when booking your holiday accommodation and check out the area around your hotel to make sure you’re not in a busy area or near any airports or train lines.

Unfortunately, a comfortable bed can’t always be guaranteed when travelling, even if you’re staying in five-star accommodation. To alleviate this, Dr Neil says it’s important to take some home comforts when travelling, whether this be “a trusty pillow or a home scent which will help you fall asleep easier in new surroundings”.
