A vet has warned people about certain dog breeds that she wouldn’t personally own because they have various health issues – and some of them are little-known to many
Choosing a dog that’s right for you can be tough, and sometimes, the cutest option isn’t the most appropriate for your family’s needs – but a vet has named five dog breeds they’d never own as they can be high maintenance in different ways.
As a vet, Dr Rachel Siu has seen enough animals to understand which different breeds have more issues than others, and to help others with their decision-making process, she posted a TikTok clip to warn others, captioning her video: “Top 5 dog breeds I would *personally* not own as a veterinarian”. First up on the list, was a husky.
Husky
Dr Siu said that often, people get husky dogs because they’re “beautiful” and “intelligent” and are “fun dogs to be around”, but she warned that “they are working dogs and they need a job to do”. She shared that they like the cold and they “shed a lot”, warning people that when they’re choosing a dog, they should pick one that fits their “lifestyle”. She also said with her “busy schedule”, she wouldn’t be able to “give this dog the attention it deserves”.
Dachshund
Dr Siu explained that dachshunds are “really cute” and “unique”, but because of their “long backs” they’re sadly prone to “intervertebral disc disease”. If you have one, you have to make sure it doesn’t “jump off high places”, and she recommended owners have a “cash fund set aside in case they need to have back surgery”.
Great Dane
Dr Siu said that they’re “super fun” to have around, and they’re “very loving” – but sadly, their “lifespan is so short”. She said that because they grow really quickly, as a result, they “develop health issues really early on in life”.
Doodles
Dr Siu said that this “isn’t a breed”, but it’s any dog mixed with a poodle. She said many people get them because they think they’re “hypoallergenic, and they don’t shed, and they’re going to be low maintenance – but this couldn’t be further from the truth.” She explained that often, these dogs are “mixed with shedding dogs”, so they will shed, and they “need grooming very frequently”, because if you don’t, the dogs will get “matted” fur, which becomes “painful” for them. She recommended people just “get a poodle”, as you don’t know what the cross-breed’s temperament will be like.
Bulldogs
Dr Siu said that “genetics are not on their side”, and she said that they “struggle to breathe” – and she also said that if she ever rescued one she would get “airway surgery” so it could breathe properly. She said they were “not a healthy breed”, and she’d recommend looking into other breeds.
