A wine expert has explained the three golden rules you must remember when opening a bottle of fizz – if you don’t follow these steps, the opening process can be rather dangerous

Be it Champagne, Prosecco, or another sparkling wine, we’re all eager to get a bottle of fizz open as quickly as possible when we have something to celebrate.

However, the opening process can be tricky and even dangerous if you’re not careful. Luckily, a wine expert has explained exactly how you should open a bottle of fizz.

In a video shared on TikTok, wine connoisseur Tom Gilbey walked his 145,000 followers through the steps you must take when opening fizz. And there are three important rules you must remember.

“Off with the foil, nice and clean, and chuck it there. And then we’ve got this cage on the top – the cage is to keep this cork in because once the cage is off, it’s bleeding dangerous,” Tom explained at the start of the clip

“So we’ll take the cage off, we unscrew the key like this – pointing it away from anyone.” Tom then listed the three main things you must remember: “Protect the cork and hold it with your hand. [Hold the] bottle at 45 degrees. And you turn the bottle – not the cork.”

Tom added: “And it should go a little bit like this,” before expertly opening his bottle. He joked at the end of the video, before taking a big swig: “And then generally, it’s good to put it in a glass – but if you’ve had a long day like this, for me, I just go straight out of the bottle.”

People on TikTok were clearly thankful for the advice, with the video racking up thousands of views and comments. One person wrote in response: “I point the cork into the garden and make the cork fly as far as I can and my children woop it up.”

Another said: “I’ve always wiggled the cage off! Who knew I was dicing with death – might have to commit to practising this method.” And a third said: “I wince every time I see people jiggling the cage off the cork – it stops the cork popping early and helps grip while opening!”
