A passenger flight from Ahmedabad to Gatwick Airport has been “involved in an incident”, Air India said, amid reports it has crashed with hundreds of people on board. Videos from the scene show smoke billowing from the crash site.
The Air India plane reportedly crashed moments after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport in Gujarat shortly after 9am BST. There have been conflicting reports on the number of passengers on board, however, local media suggested the plane was carrying at least 242 passengers and up to 290 passengers.
Air India has released a short statement to local media. The airline said: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick was involved in an incident today, Thursday, June 12, 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details.”
Flight tracking website Flightradar24 posted on social media platform X: “We are following reports of a crash of Air India flight #AI171 from Ahmedabad to London. We received the last signal from the aircraft at 08:08:51 UTC (shortly before 9.09am BST), just seconds after take off. The aircraft involved is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with registration VT-ANB.”
