A man has taken to social media to share how it took him 10 years to learn his own name after hearing a nickname his entire life – saying he couldn’t believe his surprise when he learnt the truth
An ’embarrassed’ man has revealed how it took him 10 years to learn his own name after a childhood misunderstanding. The man, named Samuel, says everyone in his life referred to him as Sam – and this is the name he learnt to write on his work at school.
It wasn’t until he turned 10 years old that he started to question his ‘real name’ – amazed to learn Sam was a nickname all along. He said on Reddit: “One day in primary school I was looking at the list of the class’s names in the wall (to have stickers and stuff put next to if we had done well in something) and couldn’t find my one.
“I did however see the name Samuel and started laughing as I had read it as if it was pronounced “Samool” and was looking around for the poor f***nuckle with that name.” Commenting on his post, one user said: “As a fellow Sam, you may find it funny to know that my dad originally put down ‘Samule’ on my birth certificate.

“My mum caught it before it was made official, but it would have made for a very original name.” Another user added: “My first name is just the letter F. I didn’t find this out until I was 16 and got my permit. I had assumed that my name was Forrest. (That is my dad’s name but we aren’t close so it wasn’t something that ever came up) Low and behold I got my permit and it says “F” for my first name. Legally I am F.”
A third user said: “I had the same thing happen, my parents always called me “LT” and told the elementary school teachers that is what to call me without me knowing. When I went to 6th grade the teacher called out for “Leslie” and then asked if anyone was absent and I said yes, told her my name was LT and she’s looked and her list and said “Oh that’s right you’re Leslie but go by LT”, that was the first time I had ever heard my real name. I’m a guy.”
