A YouTuber who has travelled through the world’s 197 countries has revealed the “most unsafe” destination he visited – where he couldn’t leave his hotel room without a military convoy.

Drew Binsky, 34, is a content creator who has spent the past 10 years travelling to every country across the world, including less-visited nations such as North Korea and Afghanistan. His YouTube channel has over 5.7 million subscribers and his travel videos have so far garnered over one billion views.

In a recent video entitled ‘Top five places where I felt the most unsafe as a traveller,’ the US-born vlogger revealed Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, as the worst place he has ever visited in terms of safety.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Drew said that the city has “no rules, no laws” and that the “offshoot of al-Qaeda,” Al-Shabab, operates there, making it a “very, very scary” place to visit.

He said: “Every time you leave your hotel, you have to have a convoy in the front and back with four bulletproof vest military guys sitting on the beds of each truck with huge AK-47s in their hand, scouting out the area before you go.”

The other four cities that made the list were Conakry (Guinea), Kandahar (Afghanistan), Port au Prince (Haiti) and Tripoli (Libya).

Drew declared Conakry as his “least favourite place in West Africa”, as he recounted walking around the capital city for less than ten minutes before being stopped by two policemen. He was also caught up in a coup. He said that it was a “complete mess” and blasted the city as “boring” with “nothing to do”.

Meanwhile, he found Taliban-ruled Kandahar in Afghanistan to be a “very unsafe place” and recalled seeing “big barbed-wired complexes”. While he said he thought the traditional markets were cool, he added that “you can just feel the tense air.”

Taking fourth place, he described Haiti’s Port-au-Prince as “total chaos”. He said he entered a “gang-controlled area” near the airport and was told several times to put his camera away, adding that he ended up having to pay off “thugs” who were controlling the area.

Finally, last on the list, was Tripoli in Libya. He said: “I will say I heard it’s safer in the last few years, but back in 2018, I was falling asleep to the sound of bombs in my hotel room.”

The YouTuber revealed how his bed frame would be “literally shaking”, but hotel staff would brush it off as happening “five miles away”. He also said he found it difficult to walk outside without being questioned by police, who weren’t used to tourists.

However, he added: “I heard nowadays it’s easier to go to Libya and it’s more open without civil war, so I hope to visit again.” The FCDO currently advises against all travel to all five destinations mentioned.
