Jaffa Cakes confirm ‘correct’ way to eat them – and it’s blowing people’s minds

Apparently we’ve been eating Jaffa Cakes wrong all this time – yes, really.

Anyone with a sweet tooth can tell you that delicately tangy Jaffa Cakes are a top-tier snack, and they are a classic for a reason, with the chocolate-orange combination being pretty much an unbeatable one.

However, for years one debate has truly divided those with a sweet tooth – is a Jaffa Cake a cake or a biscuit? It’s spongy like a cake – and even has the word in the name – but also has many of the characteristics we’ve come to expect from a biscuit – and is pretty great dunked in a mug of tea.

Either way, they taste delicious, but now it seems there’s something else that’s causing a stir with chocolate orange fans. According to a spokesperson for Jaffa Cakes, which is owned by McVitie and Price, contrary to popular belief, the chocolate part of the treat isn’t the top, it’s actually the bottom.

This means we’ve been holding them – and consuming them – upside down for as long as we can remember. Our minds are blown.

This surprising fact was confirmed on social media in 2020 by a man known only as David. David claims to have messaged the Jaffa Cake official page, asking “What side of the Jaffa is the bottom?”

A screenshot of the conversation shared on the Facebook group, Family Lockdown Tips & Ideas, showed the company’s response. They replied: “Hi David, our Jaffa Cakes go through a reservoir of chocolate, so the chocolate is on the bottom. Thanks, Jaffa Cakes.”

David was stunned by this confirmation, writing: “WTF dude” – and he wasn’t the only one who was left truly shocked by the discovery. “OMG just turned my world upside down,” one person said.

Another wrote: “Am I the only one who always thought the chocolate was the bottom anyway?” A third was confused because the box itself displays the chocolate on top of the tasty treats, saying: “On the box, it’s on the top?”

However, not everyone was bothered by the whole thing, with someone else stating that it made no difference. “Who cares? Just shove ’em in your gob,” they added – which, to be fair, is pretty great advice – because either way the chocolate orange, spongey treat tastes just as delicious.

A version of this story was first published on October 2020.
