London Underground passengers were forced to walk along the tracks to safety after a Jubilee line train broke down yesterday evening (Monday, September 1). The Jubilee line service had just left Waterloo station and was travelling towards Westminster when it ground to a halt at about 6pm.

A viral TikTok video states tired commuters were stuck on the busy train for three hours before being rescued by engineers. Many had opted to sit on the floor while lights dimmed in the carriages, while another video of evacuation appears to show a woman had passed out during the ordeal.

MyLondon understands the train stopped about 500m into the journey when emergency lights came on. The driver then inspected the door which appeared to be the cause of the issue before eventually trying to reverse the train back to Waterloo.

It travelled 300m before it became stuck again. After another delay passengers were eventually guided on foot back to the platform. Transport for London staff handed out water bottles to commuters as they walked back into the station.

The Jubilee line was suspended between Green Park and Canary Wharf while engineers dealt with the broken down train. Full service resumed shortly before 9am on Tuesday morning (September 2), but the line is still suffering from severe delays 22 hours on from the incident.

Transport for London told the BBC that staff are working as quickly as possible to restore a good service on the line. A spokesperson said: “We apologise to Jubilee line customers who were held on a faulty train yesterday evening and to those customers whose journeys have been disrupted by this incident, which involved the incident train and an additional faulty train.”
