A plan allegedly Just Stop Oil to disrupt UK airports this summer has been uncovered by police. The Metropolitan Police Service announced this afternoon (Thursday, June 27) that it has made six arrests at an event in East London.

The force thinks that some of those detained are ‘key organisers’ for Just Stop Oil. Officers say the group planned to disrupt people going on their summer holidays with action at airports. Just Stop Oil has not responded to those claims, but it said people had been arrested ‘eating soup’ at a soup night.

A spokesperson for the Met said in a statement: “We know Just Stop Oil plan to disrupt airports and thousands of holidaymakers this summer. Tonight our officers made six arrests during an event at an East London community centre.

“We believe some of those in custody are key organisers for Just Stop Oil. All the arrests were under a section of the Public Order Act which makes it illegal to conspire to disrupt national infrastructure.”

Protesters breaking the law will be ‘dealt with swiftly and robustly’

They added: “We continue to work with airport operators and others to prevent significant disruption. Activists do not have the right to commit criminal acts that may also endanger themselves and others. Anyone who disrupts the safety and security of an airport can expect to be dealt with swiftly and robustly.”

JSO posted a video of the arrest on X. A spokesperson for the group said: “BREAKING: MET POLICE ARREST PEOPLE EATING SOUP. @metpoliceuk have just raided a soup night in London, arresting 6 people. At the same time, Daniel has been arrested whilst staying with their parents.”

It comes after JSO protesters sprayed private jets at Stansted Airport with bright orange paint last week. JSO said on X that two protesters, Jennifer Kowalski and Cole Macdonald, cut the fence into the private airfield, where they claimed Taylor Swift’s private jet was parked at around 5am that morning.

In a statement published by Just Stop Oil on Friday, June 21, the protest group said: “Two Just Stop Oil supporters have painted multiple private jets on the airfield where Taylor Swift’s jet landed mere hours before. They are demanding that the incoming UK government commit to working with other governments to agree an equitable plan to end the extraction and burning of oil, gas and coal by 2030.”

However, Stansted Airport said at the time that no jets owned by Taylor Swift were at the airport.
