The Royal Family is coming to terms with King Charles and the Princess of Wales’ shock cancer diagnoses, but there is a silver lining to the hardship, according to a royal expert

The Royal Family currently find themselves facing one of their most challenging periods in recent years – with both King Charles and Kate, the Princess of Wales unable to take part in official engagements as they undergo treatment for cancer.

Neither the monarch nor Kate have confirmed what kind of cancer they are being treated for, but both have told the public that they will be off duty as they prioritise their health. Queen Camilla stepped in on Thursday for the Royal Maundy service, although the King is set to appear at the annual Easter church service in Windsor.

Despite the difficulties the royals are currently facing, an expert has claimed that amid all the change, Kate has managed to bring Prince William and his father Charles closer together, after their relationship “hasn’t always been the easiest”.

The expert – royal commentator Victoria Arbiter – explained on The Royal Beat for True Royalty TV that in her view, Kate has been key in establishing a tighter bond between the father and son, and has acted as a “healing balm” for the sometimes strained relationship.

“I think we can look at Kate – she’s so close to her own family, family is so important to her. [The Princess of Wales ] has been a really wonderful healing balm for Prince William and his father as well,” the expert explained. “Because that relationship hasn’t always been the easiest.

“I think she’s just managed to bring a real sense of warmth and camaraderie and family to the Royal Family.” The expert commentator also pointed out that Charles and Kate’s already strong relationship is likely to have become even closer as they both face similar health struggles and that they “would have found tremendous comfort in each other, going through something so similar.”

The Sunday Times reports that whilst both Kate and Charles were in the London Clinic, the King “toddled” down to visit his daughter-in-law, who had undergone major abdominal surgery. Initially, Kate’s condition was thought to be non-cancerous – she explained in an emotional video message to the nation – but post-operative tests indicated that “cancer had been present” and Kate began a course of preventative chemotherapy after the “shock” news.

Similarly, Charles entered the private hospital for treatment of a benign enlarged prostate – only for “subsequent diagnostic tests” to identify “a form of cancer.”

After Kate released her moving video statement, Buckingham Palace issued a strong statement of support for the Princess of Wales from the King, saying he was “so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did” and adding that the monarch has “remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the past weeks”.

It has also been reported that the day before Kate’s message was released to the public, she had an “emotional” lunch with her father-in-law. “The King left his lunch feeling very emotional,” a source was reported as saying in The Sun.

“They are very close and he thinks of Catherine as his daughter. There is no doubt there is a lot they can share and can use each other for support during their own deeply personal cancer battles.”
