Bananas are one of those kitchen ingredients that can ripen in an instant and turn brown and mushy even faster – but a food storage expert has shared a genius hack to avoid browning on bananas

Genius food storage hack allows bananas to stay fresh and spot-free for 26 days. This game-changer of a tip is especially useful for staple kitchen ingredients prone to rapid ripen and spoil like bananas. If your nanners often turn into brown sludgy messes before you can enjoy them, you’re probably storing them wrong.

Thankfully, a storage whizz has revealed an ingenious way to keep bananas fresh even after 26 days. Unlike most similar tricks which revolve around the use of cling film, tinfoil or wet tissue, this method is different.

Amy Cross who runs @amycrosslegacy on TikTok, where she regularly shares tips on buying, cleaning and storing everyday fruits and veggies, shared her special jar technique to keep bananas “fresh longer”.

The TikToker demonstrates her technique with chopped banana pieces, still in their skin, chilled in a glass mason jar in her fridge. To show the effectiveness, she shared an update 26 days later – the banana still as fresh as day one and the peel showing no discolouration whatsoever. Confirming the success Her video remarks: “These are the bananas I purchased on March 13 and I cut this into thirds and put it into a jar, so they’re 26 days old.” Simply astounded by the longevity she adds: “So the whole goal of putting the bananas in the jar was to see if I can get a cut banana to last 12 hours and it’s been 26 days.”

If you’re not keen on slicing up your bananas, it’s suggested to keep them in a cool, shaded area, according to the Express. Bananas should be kept at around 12 degrees, as they’ll ripen faster if they’re too warm. A dim room without direct sunlight is perfect. Hence, a warm kitchen isn’t the best spot for your bananas. For those wanting to store peeled bananas, the juice trick is recommended. Once a banana has been cut and exposed to air, it will quickly turn brown. Just sprinkle some lemon juice or pineapple juice on them this works especially well in fruit salads.
