King Charles – who was also recently diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer – travelled to London to speak with his “beloved daughter-in-law” about her own struggle with the disease
King Charles and the Princess of Wales had a major heart to heart just hours before she went public with the bombshell announcement that she had been diagnosed with cancer.
Charles was also diagnosed with a form of the condition earlier this year. He travelled to console his “beloved daughter-in-law” Kate on Thursday in London after she had recorded her moving message to the nation, but before it aired on Friday evening. The Princess had wanted to speak with the monarch to learn about his own struggle and to see how he’d been coping.
It’s understood the royal pair also spoke of how Kate said in her video that the discovery was a “huge shock” but that she knew she would “be okay”. A source said of the Windsor Castle get-together: “It is highly unusual for just the two of them to sit down together like this. The King had already been made aware that the woman he calls ‘my beloved daughter-in-law’ had cancer. They would have had lots to discuss and share because just weeks earlier the King had begun his course of treatment and dealt with announcing his diagnosis.
“The King left his lunch feeling very emotional. They are very close and he thinks of Catherine as his daughter. There is no doubt there is a lot they can share and can use each other for support during their own deeply personal cancer battles.”
According to The Sun, Charles was notified of the diagnosis before travelling to London for the lunch. Queen Camilla is also said to be supporting Kate through the life-changing news. The Prince and Princess of Wales have both stepped back from royal duties so they can be with their children George, ten,Charlotte, eight and five-year-old Louis.
It has been revealed this weekend that Princess Kate penned the moving message to the nation herself in a very short period of time in a bid to hit the right tone of reassurance for worried royal fans up and down the UK. Speaking to the Sunday Times, a friend of the Royal Family revealed that Kate wrote the speech by herself “very quickly”. Kate also thought a video message would be more reassuring than a written statement.
