Buckingham Palace confirmed that King Charles has written privately to the former US president Donald Trump in the wake of his attempted assasination at an election campaign rally on Saturday

King Charles has written a private letter to Donald Trump in the wake of his attempted assasination.

The King’s message to former US president was delivered on Sunday via the UK Embassy in Washington DC, Buckingham Palace said. It added that the contents of the correspondence will be kept private.

It is understood Charles’ message was in keeping with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s conversation with Mr Trump, in which he condemned the violence, expressed his condolences for the victims and their families, and wished the former president and those injured a quick recovery.

The King’s message comes after photographs showed the bloodied former US president defiantly pumping his fist in the air after shots were fired at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday evening. The fomer president said on his Truth Social media platform that a bullet had ‘pierced’ his ear before he was dragged to the ground by Secret Service agents. One person at the rally was killed and two other spectators were critically injured, authorities said.

The Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he was appalled by the “shocking scenes” at the rally and said “we we send him and his family our best wishes”. He added: “Political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack.”

Earlier this year, Trump described the King as a “wonderful man” and said he would pray for a “fast and full recovery” after it was announced that Charles had been diagnosed with cancer. Writing all in capital letters on his Truth Social, Trump wrote: “KING CHARLES HAS CANCER. HE IS A WONDERFUL MAN, WHO I GOT TO KNOW WELL DURING MY PRESIDENCY, AND WE ALL PRAY THAT HE HAS A FAST AND FULL RECOVERY!”
