You might imagine King Charles indulging in lavish feasts befitting of a future king, yet it seems his breakfast preferences are rather unusual.

Charles has a peculiar penchant for what can best be described as ‘bird food’, much to the amusement of his sons.

In Tina Brown’s recent tome The Palace Papers, an anecdote featuring Prince William and Stephen Fry at a breakfast buffet in Highgrove made this clear.

The revelation from the book penned by the esteemed journalist and biographer of Princess Diana is rather entertaining.

Brown details an instance where Prince Charles took his sons to the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, accompanied by the beloved actor Stephen Fry. While enjoying breakfast, Fry approached the buffet only to be humorously warned off by a young Prince William.

Brown writes: “At breakfast at Highgrove, Fry was inspecting a buffet when he lifted a tureen that offered Charles’ preferred heap of Linseed.

“Prince William said ‘Oh no, don’t go near the bird table, Stephen, that’s only for Pa’.”

This amusing interaction not only showcased Charles’ fondness for the age-old, fibre-rich seeds favoured by health enthusiasts, but also offered a glimpse into the jovial rapport he shared with his sons.

Brown further noted that Fry was captivated by the way the boys ribbed their father, viewing it as a ‘truly healthy sign’.

In recent times, with the rise of veganism and healthier living trends, foods such as linseed have seen a surge in popularity.

However, even today they remain somewhat unconventional, making it all the more surprising to find royalty so ahead of the game!
