A ‘Culinary Scientist Chef’ on has explained how you can keep avocado fresh for days with four simple hacks, meaning you’ll never have to waste leftover halves again
Ever found yourself using half an avocado, storing the other half in the fridge, only to discover it’s turned from green to brown the next day?
Well, a “Culinary Scientist Chef” has shared four handy hacks that will keep your unused avocado “fresh and green”, meaning you’ll never have to bin that half again.
Jessica Gavin, who boasts more than 30,000 followers on TikTok, took to the social media platform to guide viewers through the four easy steps. The video was captioned: “Keep your unused avocado fresh and green! Let me show you how to store them.”
Her first piece of advice was to “run the avocado under some cold tap water [and] shake off the excess”. Jessica explained that the chlorine in tap water, which is added to kill harmful germs, can also help to “reduce browning” in avocados.
After giving it a rinse, tightly wrap the avocado in cling film and pop it in the fridge.
Jessica’s second tip involved squeezing lemon juice onto the avocado. She said: “It acts as an antioxidant to reduce browning.” However, she cautioned against adding “too much” as this could cause the avocado to turn “mushy”.
Lastly, you can “brush a neutral-tasting oil” on the surface of the avocado. According to Jessica, this creates a “lipid barrier” so that “oxygen cannot interact with the open fruit”.
Jessica’s final nifty trick for avocado lovers was: “If you want, the quickest way is to just place the avocado cut side down on a piece of foil, then wrap it up tight. This creates a physical barrier so that no oxygen can come through!”
Her video went viral, amassing thousands of likes, with numerous viewers expressing their gratitude for her savvy advice.
