Liam and Noel Gallagher’s lesser-known brother away from Oasis spotlight

Noel and Liam Gallagher may have been locked in a well-documented feud for years before their triumphant reunion this summer, but their lesser-known elder brother has managed to stay impartial and keep a solid bond with both.

Paul Anthony Gallagher, the firstborn of Peggy and Tommy Gallagher, was raised in Burnage, Manchester, right alongside his now-famous younger brothers. Being the eldest, Paul enjoyed the luxury of having his own room while Noel, who is now 58, and Liam, 52, had to share, reports the Express.

In his 1997 memoir ‘Brothers: From Childhood to Oasis’, Paul shared insights into life with his celebrity brothers. He wrote: “We were just brothers and on the outside we appeared the same as anybody else, if a bit more argumentative and disagreeable. Then one day they both showed a staggering talent for music and a surge of confidence that led them to achieve. It left me questioning my life.”

He reminisced about the time he proposed joining Oasis on tour to manage their merchandise sales and even suggested setting up an official fan club for the band. Despite his offers, Paul claims his younger siblings didn’t take him up on the idea of getting involved with the iconic Britpop group.

On the Michael Anthony Show podcast, Paul mentioned that he could have been part of the band, hinting at his own singing abilities. He said: “I can sing. I don’t sing anymore, when you have got two fellas in your family who can sing then what the f*** are you doing singing. Do something else.”

When probed about his guitar skills compared to Noel’s, Paul responded: “No I can’t do that s***. That’s why I gave it to Noel when I was seven. I was like ‘Do something with that or my mother will kill me for wasting money on a f***ing guitar. Have it. Take it away’.”

In the same interview, Paul revealed that he and Liam maintain a close relationship. He mentioned that they attempt to catch up “every other day”.

Regarding whether he ever tried to meddle in the ‘Live Forever’ duo’s escapades, Paul said he hadn’t. He confessed: “No because they don’t care. I don’t care what they do and they don’t care what I do, unless I overstep the mark and then they are always on our case. I don’t care, that’s why I come across as sometimes rude.”

Paul, who works as a DJ and photographer, is tipped to be Liam’s best man at his postponed wedding to Debbie Gwyther. Before Oasis announced their 14-date comeback tour earlier this week, Paul expressed his past annoyance at being constantly asked about an Oasis reunion by fans.

He said: “When you are out in the pub, the first thing is a ‘hello’ they acknowledge me and the second things is ‘[inaudible noise]’, it’s like ‘When are you going to ask them’. You know what I mean. Why are you asking me for?”.

He added: “I get it. There’s no stars in this country. There happens to be two in my family. I get it, but it doesn’t mean I want to talk about to the d***head at the bus stop.”

On July 25, 26 and 30, Oasis are set to play London’s Wembley Stadium, followed by another pair of gigs on August 2 and 3. On August 8, the Gallaghers will commandeer Edinburgh’s Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium for two consecutive nights (August 8 and 9), Followed by Dublin’s Croke Park (August 16 and 17) before returning to Wembley on September 27 and 28.
