Liam Gallagher revealed that he was diagnosed with arthritis approximately six years ago, telling MOJO Magazine in a 2022 interview that he required a double hip replacement.

The Oasis frontman later shared that he underwent hip surgery in 2023, explaining to fans that the joint replacements were essential due to arthritis triggered by a long-standing thyroid issue.

At the time of his operation, he took to Twitter, now called X, writing: “Morning Rastas so I had my Hip operation last wk [week] all went well and RESPEK [respect] to all the doctors n nurses who looked after me. Big shout out to the A team for getting us home safe n sound.”

What are the symptoms of arthritis?

The NHS explained: “Arthritis is a common condition that causes pain and inflammation in a joint. In the UK, millions of people have arthritis or other, similar conditions that affect the joints.”

Arthritis can affect people of all ages, children included. There are two main types you should be aware of, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, explains the Mirror.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis in the UK which typically affects people who are in their mid-40s or above. More common in women, the condition is also often more prevalent in those with a family history of arthritis. However, osteoarthritis can develop at any age, particularly being triggered by an injury or in connection with other joint-related conditions like gout or rheumatoid arthritis.

It initially affects the smooth cartilage lining the joint, making movement more difficult and leading to pain and stiffness. As the cartilage begins to deteriorate, the tendons and ligaments overcompensate, causing pain.

The NHS warns: “This can cause swelling and the formation of bony spurs called osteophytes. Severe loss of cartilage can lead to bone rubbing on bone, altering the shape of the joint and forcing the bones out of their normal position.”

The most commonly affected joints are those in the:

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is less common than osteoarthritis and typically occurs in people between the ages of 30 and 50. It is also more prevalent in women than in men.

In rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system mistakenly targets the affected joints, causing pain and swelling. The synovium, the outer covering of the joint, is the first area to be affected.

According to the NHS, it can then spread across the joint, causing increased swelling and changing its shape. This may lead to the breakdown of bone and cartilage, with individuals also at risk of developing problems in other tissues and organs.

What are the symptoms of arthritis?

There are numerous sub-types of arthritis, with varying symptoms including:

  • joint pain, tenderness and stiffness
  • inflammation in and around the joints
  • restricted movement of the joints
  • warm red skin over the affected joint
  • weakness and muscle wasting
