You’re probably making a little-known mistake when it comes to applying moisturiser, and a skincare expert has warned against it because it can cause ‘irritation and dryness’
Separating skincare facts from fiction can be really tough, and as a result, many of us are making mistakes that could be detrimental to our faces according to an expert.
From SPF to Vitamin C serums, cleansers, moisturisers and more, there are so many steps that we should be incorporating into our daily routines if we want to make our skin glowy, smooth, and luscious. However, experts have shared that some mistakes we make while trying to make the most of our faces can actually have the opposite effect to the desired.
Professionals at Fresha have shared that when you’re putting moisturisers on your face, there’s a specific way you should be applying it because otherwise it’s likely to cause “irritation”, and even “dryness”.
Regardless of the moisturiser you choose, experts said: “When rubbing in moisturiser, serums, or sun cream, it’s important to do so in circular motions or to tap it in lightly, as pulling on the skin can make it harder for products to absorb and can cause irritation or dryness”, which is not what you want from this product, reports Femail.
Also, the skincare expert warned that the order of the products you’re using really does matter too, as if you apply them in the wrong order, then it will reduce their effectiveness.
If you apply suncream straight before your moisturiser, for example, it will “dilute the impact of your SPF”. According to L’Oreal Paris: “Since products with SPF are specifically formulated with certain sun-protective ingredients, layering one on after your moisturiser will help block out any harsh rays. So, in other words, SPF always goes on after moisturiser (and before make-up) in the morning.”
Skincare expert at Fresha said that areas “prone to dehydration” such as the neck, should also be focused on when it comes to moisturiser. She said: “Applying moisturising products to your neck and chest is important to reduce signs of premature ageing, as these delicate areas are especially prone to dehydration.”
If you’re looking to prevent dryness too, it’s important to not wash your face with “too hot water”, because it can “strip” the skin of oils that occur naturally. Cold water, conversely, can “trap debris” in the skin’s pores, as is “seals” them.
