Londoners are done choosing their MPs – we just don’t know who they are quite yet. Voters have been casting their ballots since 7am this morning (Thursday, July 4).

Now, votes will be counted and finalised at centres across the city, and its representatives will be officially declared. MyLondon has reporters at multiple counts overnight, and we’ll bring you all the latest as it happens.

The exit poll was released at 10pm with a landslide forecast for Labour. This is put together by experts who have asked people who they voted for after they cast their ballot. This is a final prediction of the result.

This will give an impression of what the swing (the difference between votes in seats this time round when compared to the last election in 2019) nationwide could be. The first actual results will give us an indication as to whether the party has achieved this. Blyth and Ashington in the North East of England is expected to be one of the first to declare at 11.30pm.

The result at Houghton and Sunderland South is expected to be known slightly later at 11.45pm. Vote shares in these seats will be poured over, and their swings will give us our first solid hint as to what results could be in London.

Putney is thought to be the first seat in the city to declare – at 1.30am. Usually a solid Labour seat, it might nevertheless show us how much the issue of the Israel-Gaza conflict will eat into the party’s share of the vote in the city.

Experts suggest that Labour would need a uniform swing of around 13 per cent nationwide to overturn the Conservatives’ majority in the House of Commons. To achieve this, Sir Keir Starmer’s party would need to win 326 seats nationwide.

The Liberal Democrats also hope to win some seats off of the Conservatives, particularly in the South West of London.

Greens and Reform UK are predicted to be unlikely to get any seats in London, but their vote share will be one to watch.

Key independent candidates such as Jeremy Corbyn (Islington North) and Faiza Shaheen (Chingford and Woodford Green) will be fighting against their former party, Labour, for their seats.
