Londoners who struggled with the last week’s heatwave can expect a brief respite from the sweltering heat – but not for long. The capital is in for a weekend of cooler, cloudier conditions, according to the Met Office, with temperatures reaching a high of just 22C.

However, things will start to sizzle again by the middle of next week as thermometers are predicted to climb past the 30C mark from Thursday, July 11. This will continue in to Friday, when the sun will shine bright until it sets just after 9pm.

Today (Thursday, July 4), is set to be a lovely summer’s day, complete with sunshine and a gentle breeze, but changes are already on the way. Overnight, cloudy skies will arrive, alongside a few light showers drifting in from the west as a westerly breeze picks up.

Cooler weekend upon us

Saturday, July 6 will be noticeably cooler, with a high of just 22C and a chance of scattered rainfall in the evening. It will feel more humid, and any sunshine is likely to be limited to later in the day.

Sunday follows a similar theme – breezy and cool, with similar highs and occasional outbreaks of rain. Sunny weather may break through the clouds between 10am and 4pm but it currently looks more likely to be a wet one.

Monday sees a continuation of this unsettled spell with overcast skies and early showers, though it should turn drier and brighter by the afternoon.

Return of the heat

Tuesday marks a turning point in the fortnightly forecast as sunshine is set to return and the mercury will rise to 25C. From there, the heat intensifies rapidly – so prepare for some more sweaty journeys on the London Underground.

Temperatures will skyrocket to 29C on Wednesday, July 9 before the heatwave resumes in full force. We’ll enjoys a positively toasty 30C or more from Thursday, July 10 to Saturday, July 12. The experts at the Met Office say this will be and feel even warmer than the recent spell of warm weather – phew!

In more good news (for some people at least), the long-range forecast hints that this hot pattern will persist beyond the weekend and later into July. As of now, temperatures are likely to become “warm or very warm once again” across the south of the UK as we move deeper into the summer.
