We might be enjoying settled weather for the the first time in September, but this is coupled with brisk overnight temperatures
London experienced unseasonably warm weather towards the end of last week as temperatures climbed to 27C in the capital. These balmy conditions were due to the jet stream carrying a surge of warm air from the Caribbean and southern US.
Although conditions remained sunny, it became clear we had experienced the last day of summer when the mercury dropped to 18C by Sunday. Now winds from the North Atlantic are having more of an impact on British weather, it’s likely for temperatures in the mid-to-late teens for the remainder of September.
We could, meanwhile, have a weirdly warm spell come October.
Forecasters say this will make for a more settled end to the month, although the high pressure behind this could result in the first morning frost since spring.
Five days of sunshine
Sunny weather or a mix of cloud and sun is expected in London from Monday, September 22 until Friday, September 26 according to the BBC.
This will then be replaced by light rain throughout the weekend before settled sunny and cloudy conditions return.
Despite this positive outlook, experts have warned this combines with a sudden drop in temperatures – particularly overnight. Tuesday’s forecast states it will drop as low as 5C in the early hours of the morning, while similarly brisk lows of 8C are expected the following two nights.
On Monday the mercury will peak at 16C during the day before rising slightly to 17C on Tuesday. It will eventually peak at 18C on Wednesday where it’s expected to remain until the weekend.
In the long-term forecast, the Met Office says temperatures could be above average as we enter October.
The weather should remain mostly dry, although meteorologists are monitoring the remnants of Hurricane Gabrielle which is barrelling past Bermuda in the Atlantic Ocean.
