A survey of 2,000 adults has revealed that a staggering 42% of Londoners regularly struggle with dry skin, followed by 40% in the North East and 32% in the East Midlands.
Across the UK, more than nine in 10 (94%) people experience this issue at some point in their lives, with the problem being particularly prevalent around their legs, hands and feet.
Many (47%) attribute this to cold weather, while 29% notice a difference after sun exposure. A significant 85% blame their shower routine for their dry skin, despite nearly half (48%) stating that bathing or showering takes up most of their beauty regime.
Dermatologist Emma Amoafo-Mensah, who is collaborating with Dove on the launch of their reformulated Dove Advanced Care Body Wash, warned: “Taking a long shower in too-hot water can strip away the skin’s natural oils.”
“Without these, water evaporates more quickly in a process known as Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL), which can lead to feelings of tightness and dryness.”
The research also found that one in 10% experience dry skin ‘all the time’. Additionally, 49% have noticed their skin drying out as they age, making 22% feel self-conscious about their skin.
According to the OnePoll research, 20% have even tried to hide dry patches by strategically choosing their clothing to cover affected areas.
