Sadiq Khan has said that works to upgrade a North London Underground station have been put on hold as Transport for London (TfL) does not have enough funding available for the works. These would include a new entrance and ticket hall.
It comes as the Mayor of London and TfL continue to call for ‘longer term’ funding for a list of projects, including new Tube trains and an extension of the network.
Mr Khan told the London Assembly on July 23: “Transport for London (TfL) does not currently have funding to deliver the previously proposed station capacity upgrade scheme at Camden Town. However, it is continuing to seek opportunities to partner with a developer which would deliver such a scheme, including a new entrance and ticket hall with step-free access.

“TfL has successfully implemented this model at a number of stations across London to deliver much needed station improvements. A good example of this is at Elephant and Castle, where a new station entrance is being delivered as part of a wider mixed-use development, including hundreds of new homes.”
Development in the offing for years
The proposed development of the stop has been in the offing for years. In 2019, the mayor said: “Transport for London (TfL) is reliant on steady and sustained investment from the Government to support major capital projects, and has no certainty of capital funding beyond 2020.
“Over the next twelve months TfL will be making the case to Government for confirmed capital support beyond this in the Comprehensive Spending Review to enable critical infrastructure projects, including the work to transform Camden Town station. TfL will also continue to look to identify third party funding, and work with potential development partners which could help fund and deliver the proposed station improvements.
“TfL continue to update its consents strategy for the over station development at the station and have not yet determined if it will be submitting this planning application.”
