Temperatures will shoot up to 28C in a few days following a period of heavy thunderstorms. A weather warning has been put in place by the Met Office from 3pm today (Friday, June 13) as some areas can expect up to 50mm of rain.
In place until 6am on Saturday morning, London is currently set to experience heavy rainfall from about 8pm or 9pm tonight and last until the early hours. After this, summer sunshine should back into full force with the BBC predicting eight days of straight sunshine.
On Sunday the mercury is expected to peak at 23C, before climbing to 25C on Monday and 28C on Tuesday. Temperatures should then hover between 26C and 27C for the remainder of the week.
Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said: “We’ve got a very warm, humid, spell of wet weather to come. It’s all because we’ve got air moving in from the south, so the air is originating across Spain and Portugal and has been moving its way northwards.
“We’re going to see increasingly humid conditions with very warm days and some quite muggy nights as well and the general gist is that western parts of the UK are likely to see the majority of the rain and the thundery showers.
“But, as we go into Friday, we could see some of that also moving across the east and south east as well for some thunder there for a time.”
Despite thundery weather being predicted to smash the UK, forecasters expect it be warmer in London than parts of Morocco and Portugal.
The Met Office yellow alert for this weekend reads: “Thunderstorms are possible across parts of eastern and southeastern England from Friday afternoon through to the early hours of Saturday.
“Although many places within the warning area may not see any impacts, torrential downpours could bring 30-50mm of rain, with a risk of even greater accumulations should thunderstorms line up, and with much of the rain perhaps falling in a short space of time, leading to a risk of surface water flooding.
“Thunderstorms may also bring large hail, gusty winds and frequent lightning to some places which could cause damage and power cuts.”
