We spoke to a weather expert about why things have taken a turn for the worst recently

It’s been feeling increasingly chillier in London recently, with summer well and truly behind us, but the weather’s set to change even more, and sooner than you might think.

MyLondon spoke to Jim Dales of the British Weather Services to find out exactly what we can expect and how the science behind it works.

He said: “The overhead sunshine has disappeared south of the equator. This is autumn, days are getting shorter, nights are getting longer, so temperatures start to fall.”

But he added the change isn’t linear, it’s contingent on the air stream. Jim said: “Much will depend on the air stream. For the last few days we’ve been under a high pressure, leading to shades of grey, but the cloud at night keeps temperature up hence why we haven’t seen too much frost.”

However the weather expert added that we’re about to see showers and in around two weeks when we enter November, it will begin to feel seriously chilly. He said: “The weather is about to break, by Sunday we will be taking in low pressure off the Atlantic, so rain is about to arrive. That will lead to a mixed period. November will be when we see the real cold. It may well be a gradual thing but we become more susceptible to it.”

Will it be sunny again?

Forecasters down at the BBC suggest the sun will be making an appearance everyday from next Monday (October 20) through to Friday (October 24). It won’t be searing summer heat but it will definitely be nice to see a few golden rays.

  • Monday, October 20 – H16C L10C, thundery showers and a gentle breeze.
  • Tuesday, October 21 – H16C L8C, sunny intervals and a gentle breeze.
  • Wednesday, October 22 – H15C L12C, light rain showers and a gentle breeze.
  • Thursday, October 23 – H16C L10C, light rain showers and a gentle breeze.
  • Friday, October 24 – H15C L9C, sunny intervals and a gentle breeze.
