The new system is being trialled in certain stores
Tesco is testing a significant new system in a bid to tackle theft within its stores. Customers in certain areas using the ‘scan as you shop’ service will now be asked to utilise push-on scales for their trolleys to weigh their items, ensuring the quantity of products aligns with the number of items they’ve placed in their cart.
If the numbers tally, customers can simply pay for their shopping. However, if there’s a discrepancy, a staff member will manually scan items to verify that nothing has been missed out.
The new scales are also applicable for baskets. This modification is being tested at the Gateshead Trinity Square Extra store in Gateshead, near Newcastle. However, some Tesco customers aren’t thrilled about the change, reports the Express.

One customer expressed: “Myself and my partner have tried it a couple of times and each time it’s never worked so the staff have to rescan every item in our full trolley, so it doesn’t end up saving time.”
Another customer queried online: “Since when has Tesco had a weighbridge? Does your Tesco have a weighbridge???”
A third said: “Am I at border control or Tesco?”
A spokesperson for Tesco stated: “We’re running a trial in a very small number of stores to help our Scan as You Shop customers make sure they haven’t missed any items when scanning.”
The spokesperson continued: “This will reduce the number of manual checks by colleagues, reduce queuing times and streamline the checkout experience for customers.”
