A make-up artist says there are a number of common mistakes people are making when it comes to applying make-up – and the popular methods can add years to your look

A make-up artist has warned there are a number of common beauty hacks many of us use that could actually be making us look older.

We are inundated with social media posts every day telling us which products to buy and techniques to make our faces look flawless – but, not everything works for everyone. Some people spend years trying out different and new products to see which give you the most glowing skin and flawless face.

Beauty expert Mayra Lopez has left people open-mouthed after sharing her dos and don’ts when it comes to applying make-up. The pro says that a number of people are making errors when it comes to applying eyeshadow, eyeliner, concealer, and contour to their faces – adding years onto their look.

Taking to her TikTok page, @the.mayra.lopez, Mayra said: “These little mistakes will make the biggest difference in your makeup game! I love helping women of all ages feel confident and beautiful in their own skin!”

She showed how on one side of her face she had used common makeup techniques, while on the other she used her own methods – which gave a much more youthful and elevated look. Mayra used the same products on each side but said “look at the difference”.

Speaking about how to perfect your eyebrows, she explained that you don’t want to just be filling them in; this “drops them down”. “You actually want to lift them up,” Mayra said.

She recommends that beauty lovers brush up their eyebrow hairs before filling them in. Her technique is said to give your face an “automatic lift”. And to elevate your eye look further, Mayra advises those with an eyeliner flick obsession may need to change how they draw it on. Mayra added: “Instead of applying your eyeliner just to the corner and bringing it down, make sure you create a small baby wing for a lift.”

When it comes to eye looks, Mayra said anyone with mature skin should avoid wearing shimmery eyeshadow on the brown bone. She commented: “If you have mature skin, you can still wear shimmers – just avoid wearing them on the brow bone, because if you have a hooded eye, this is actually going to make your hooded eye look more hooded.”

In order to highlight the brow bone, the make-up artist advises using a matte, light shade. When it comes to getting rid of dark, undereye circles, many of us turn to concealer. While Mayra says you can incorporate the beauty product into your make-up routine, she advises to only apply it in the inner and outer corners of your eyes.

She added: “When you apply your concealer all the way down, you get that patchy, greasy look – instead use it just in the inner and outer corner.” Placement is also key when it comes to contour and blush, insists Mayra.

She explained: “If you apply your contour too low, it’s actually dropping your face down.” She said beauty fans should apply contour in the “hollow area of your bone”. She added that blusher should be applied above your contour, and not directly in the centre of your cheek.

Mayra’s advice video has raked in 447,000 views and people were left gobsmacked by her face-contrasting results. One individual said: “Thanks for this! In my early 30s and realising makeup I’ve done for years doesn’t really work anymore. Very helpful!”

“The way I gasped when you took your hand away,” said another. “This is so useful”, commented another. Another said her tips have made “such a huge difference”.

Another added: “I’m 24 and people always think I’m in my 30s 🙁 I think it’s cause I do all the mistakes when doing my makeup.” “This is so useful,” said another.
