A murder investigation is underway following the death of a man run over by a car in Barnet last week.

Police were called to an ‘armed’ fight between two people on Hendon’s Park Road at around 4.15pm on Tuesday, July 1.

Upon arrival, they found a severely injured Shoaib Kochay lying in the street. Witnesses say the 22-year-old was driven at by a ‘white Tesla’ that later fled the scene.

A car matching the description the witnesses gave was found abandoned a short time later on nearby Mount Road. Mr Kochay died in hospital on Wednesday (July 9), more than a week later.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police confirmed it does not believe the incident poses a wider threat to the public. The force is now urging witnesses, especially those with video footage, to come forward.

Detective Inspector Jon Moseling from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, who is leading the investigation, said: “Our thoughts are very much with Shoaib’s friends and family at this sad time and our investigation continues at pace to piece together what happened and to bring those responsible for Shoaib’s death to justice.

“We have been busy gathering footage and speaking to witnesses, but we are still keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time who has not yet spoken to us, especially anyone who may have seen two white Teslas, licence plates BJ22EOT and BK72HHU, either before or after the incident.”

Detective chief superintendent Luke Williams, who leads policing for the area, added: “We know that the area was busy at the time and there were multiple witnesses to the incident.

“I would encourage anyone who has not yet spoken to us, to get in touch and support our investigation.”

Mr Kochay’s family are now being supported by specialist officers.

Anyone with information, footage or images of the incident can upload these to the dedicated appeal page. Alternatively, reports can be made to police on 101, quoting 6173/1JUL, or anonymously to Crimestoppers via 0800 555 111.
