A man has been charged with murder following the death of a pensioner in Lewisham. Vasile Iosebica, of Wellmeadow Road, is accused of strangling the 87-year-old man in a house on the same street on Sunday morning (August 24).
The 47-year-old was arrested and is due to appear at Bromley Magistrates’ Court later today. It’s believed he and the victim were known to each other.
Police were first called to the residential road at around 1am to reports of a death within the property. The elderly man was declared dead at the scene by paramedics, with officers now supporting his next-of-kin.
He is yet to be named publicly by the Metropolitan Police. The force is continuing its investigation but is not appealing for information at this stage.
A post-mortem examination held yesterday gave the victim’s cause of death as compression of the neck.
A statement released by the Metropolitan Police reads: “Met detectives have launched a murder investigation following the death of an 87-year-old man in Lewisham. Police were called at about 01:00hrs on Sunday, 24 August, to an address in Wellmeadow Road, Lewisham, alongside the London Ambulance Service, following reports of a death at the property.
“An 87-year-old man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.
“A post-mortem examination held on Monday, 25 August gave the cause of death as compression of the neck. Vasile Iosebica, 47 (05.02.78), of Wellmeadow Road, Lewisham, was arrested on suspicion of murder and was subsequently charged on Tuesday, 26 August.
“He will appear at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 26 August. The victim and Iosebica were known to each other.”
