A man has suffered potentially-life changing injuries after police believe he fell into the path of an oncoming van in Croydon. Police say the victim was attacked moments beforehand, which resulted in him stumbling into the road.

The victim, who is aged in his 40s, was rushed to hospital following the incident in the heart of South Croydon on South End at 4.10pm on Saturday (August 16). The van driver spoke to officers at the scene and was not arrested, the Metropolitan Police has confirmed.

Pictures from the scene show about a dozen police and ambulance vehicles responded to the incident near South Croydon station, while an air ambulance was also sent to the scene.

Anyone with information about what happened is asked to get in touch with the police. A force spokesperson said: “Police were called at around 4.10m on Saturday, August 16 to reports of a road traffic collision in South End, Croydon.

“A van was in collision with a 40-year-old man who was taken to hospital where he remains with potentially life-changing injuries. Enquiries are ongoing, however at this time officers believe the injured man was the victim of an assault prior to the collision which may have caused him to fall into the path of the van.

“The driver of the van was spoken to by officers at the scene. He was not arrested. Anyone with information with could assist the investigation is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 5026/16Aug.”
