A man has taken to social media to share the unusual object he spotted moving across the moon late at night over London – and has asked users whether they have an explanation for it

A man has sparked a debate after sharing a video of a mysterious ‘long object’ moving across the sky above London. Sharing the 40-second clip on the UFO thread on Reddit, the man claims to have spotted the object moving “very slowly” from left to right at about 11pm.

The video shows a bright, orange moon low in the sky with an unusual ‘line’ over halfway down it. The line travels from the centre of the moon to the edge throughout the clip. Commenting on the video, the Reddit user said: “I saw this object moving across the moon (beautiful orangey moon) last night. I can tell you it was exactly 23:06.

“Apart from being flabbergasted at the moon’s beauty, I couldn’t believe there was a long object moving very slowly from left to right! Has anyone seen anything like this before and can someone help me find an explanation, please? I posted on the London subreddit, but I’m not sure we found any explanations.

“I don’t think it’s a stationary object. The moon is moving from left to right in this video, therefore if the object is stationary, then it would go from right to left in this video which it doesn’t. I think it’s definitely a very slowly moving-object.

“I also thought [it could be] an arch of balloons that may have escaped a wedding but this object doesn’t move that much in terms of bending, which I’d expect a group of balloons to do.” The video has sparked a discussion online after receiving more than 2,000 upvotes and almost 300 comments from users debating what it could be. One user said: “This is really interesting.”

Another user added: “I saw something very similar a few days ago in the northeast of England but from a closer vantage point.” A third user said: “Man that is weird, would love to see if anyone else saw this, maybe with a close-up image, great view and camera work though.” One more user added: “I don’t know what to make of it on its face but seems very interesting. If we were just to assume it was on or even near the moon, the thing would be massive.”
