A man has been jailed after his stash of heroin and cocaine, worth more than £1,000, was found near a school in East London. Taz Uddin, 50, of Brook Drive, was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, and possession of Class B drugs.

Earlier this year, a school in Tower Hamlets contacted the Metropolitan Police after they saw Uddin acting suspiciously in the area. Officers examined CCTV footage from the school and used to it build up a pattern of behaviour displayed by Uddin.

They also found a stash of more than 100 wraps of heroin and cocaine nearby, hidden in a cigarette box, estimated to be worth £1,100. With a warrant, the police also examined Uddin’s address on April 22, and found more Class A and B drugs, as well as drugs paraphernalia and clothes that matched his outfit seen on the school CCTV.

Police worked with the school to retrieve the drugs and ensure pupils were safeguarded, the Met have said.

Detective Inspector Sam Bennett, who led the investigation, said: “I have seen firsthand the devastating effects of drugs on individuals, families and communities. As officers it is our duty to not only intercept the flow of drugs but to address the root causes that lead people into this destructive cycle.

“Uddin is a prime example that highlights the impact that intelligence-led targeted policing can have. By building trust within the community we can create a safer environment where people feel supported in seeking help.”

Uddin was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Tuesday, July 16.
