Ordering online is always a bit of a gamble.

Most of us are used to shopping online for everything from clothes to groceries, but sometimes, what you order is not what arrives on your doorstep. From placing a clothes order and being shocked at what arrives to embarrassing encounters with delivery drivers, the world of online shopping doesn’t always play out the way you expect.

And one man was particularly gobsmacked when he picked up a parcel that wasn’t at all what he was expecting to receive. Instead of a sealed bag or plain cardboard box, the man received a Birds Eye fish finger box with a Royal Mail sticker on it.

A picture of the box was shared on X (formerly Twitter) in a post that has since been deleted, but a screenshot of the post was later re-shared on Reddit. In the original post, text alongside the image read: “When you buy something from eBay and they package it like this…”

It’s unclear what the man had actually ordered, but from the sounds of it, it wasn’t fish fingers! In the image, the cardboard box – which once housed 10 cod fish fingers – had been sealed with sellotape at the top, suggesting the eBay seller had simply used the box in a pinch when they couldn’t find another suitable container.

Commenters on the post were equally baffled by the strange delivery tool the seller had used. Some even shared their own stories of having items delivered in strange boxes.

One person said: “Better than the CPU I received in a Domino’s pizza box a couple of weeks ago (and no the seller didn’t use any void packaging and they didn’t cover up the hole the sauce slots into, the CPU didn’t work).” As another added: “My mate delivered a stick yesterday, it had a tracked label on it. No, it wasn’t any tool handle, it was a nice bendy stick though.”

A third person shared: “Over here at DHL, someone had sent something in a Jordan’s Cereal box. That was definitely a first! Otherwise, we’ve had bin bags and all sorts around here.” Someone else wrote: “I once bought a used HDD enclosure on eBay, and it arrived wrapped in newspaper and sellotape, with an address label and postage stamp.”

One commenter even admitted they’d done the same thing before, but used an empty box of chicken burgers instead of fish fingers. And while some said they were all for reusing and recycling, someone pointed out there was something particularly gross about it being a fish finger box as they “aren’t individually wrapped”.
