A grim discovery inside a can of tuna has sparked a debate about the origins of the unsavoury item – with some people suggesting it was a baby fish or fish guts
Most of us have found something unusual concealed within food packaging over the years – stories of creepy crawlies in salad or small pieces of plastic in loaves of bread aren’t particularly uncommon.
One man got a lot more than he bargained for in a can of tuna recently though, and documented his disgusting discovery for all to see. In a snap shared to Reddit, the alien object is seen nestled among the tuna chunks in brine, prompting users of the platform to speculate what exactly it is.
“Found this in my tuna can?” the man penned alongside the image of the grim find, which appeared hook shaped. “Congratulations, your tuna was pregnant.”
Scores of other Reddit users, meanwhile, suggested it was indeed a fish hook that had somehow made it through the packaging process. And others joked the man would receive a “tour of the factory” by means of compensation.
Elsewhere, however, others theorised much more revolting scenarios. “I hate to tell you that all of the parts of the tuna fish are not uniform flaky pale meat like we are used to in cans, they have skin and organs and everything, and that could totally get into a can of tuna meat,” one person penned.
Another added a vomit-inducing response: “A guy who worked in a cannery told me that most tuna have huge parasitic worms living in them which get rendered along with the fish. So worms too.”
And a third chimed in: “All of it that’s cheap, for example hot dogs or chicken nuggets are often made from a puree that can also have bones, fat, skin, organs etc. Stuff that’s super processed and borderline junk is mostly going to be this.”
Thankfully, others attempted to reassure the man it was simply part of a tuna that had gone rogue. “I think it’s part of the tuna,” one person declared. “There are dark parts of tuna meat that gets trimmed off because it tastes bloody and metallic. If you watch a filleting video you can see it. Could be a cooked glob of bloodline or similar bits.”
A second agreed: “I’m pretty sure that’s just a chunk of the skin.”
