With temperatures climbing to a 32C high in London today according to the Met Office, you might be looking for free and easy ways to beat the heat. Luckily, senior meteorologist and ex-Navy serviceman Jim Dale has some top tips for anyone looking to cool off.

Dale advised: “I’m ex-Royal Navy and I know this was developed with the Royal Navy. If you’re feeling really, really hot and you think you’re going a bit faint, find yourself a bowl of water, put some ice in the water. Dip your fingers in and if necessary, your toes and your feet,” reports the Express.

He further mentioned the duration for the cooling method on Sky News: “Leave them in for two to four minutes, as long as you can stand. I promise you because it’s scientifically proven within the Royal Navy that it will take your body temperature down by around 1C.”

Noting the significant difference it could make, he added: “If you’ve gone from 37C to 39 that will bring you back to where you need to be and cool you down.” Despite a cold and wet summer in the UK so far, Dale’s advice could be a lifesaver as temperatures climb into the 30s.

Reddit users have offered similar advice, with one suggesting ‘wrapping an ice pack in a tea towel’ before placing it on the back of your neck or under your armpits. One user explained: “Applying that cold temp to your feet transfers the temperature into your blood and travels all through your body. The US military does something similar with cold packs placed on the wrists of soldiers.”
