A man who kicked the door of a court, urinated and then sprayed a policer officer with water, was arrested in chaotic scenes outside a South London magistrates court this morning. The man, whose identity MyLondon does not know, left Croydon Magistrates’ Court at around 10:55am on Friday (August 29), shattering the glass at the top of the door as he kicked it open.
MyLondon’s reporter was stood outside as the man paced around muttering, took a wee on the side of the court building, and hurled insults at staff. MyLondon heard the man call security and police officers ‘f**king p**syholes’ before tossing his lit cigarette. He was followed down the court steps by a police officer who warned him about his behaviour.
Then our reporter saw the man spray the officer with water from his bottle. The officer then chased the man down Barclay Road, spraying him with what appeared to be a PAVA spray – a synthetic incapacitant similar to pepper spray – which officers are issued with.
It appeared the spray hit a woman, who was heard referring to the man as her brother, and the officer’s colleague, causing both their eyes to turn red and stream with tears. As the two police officers tried to detain the man, MyLondon watched the woman get physically involved by holding onto the man, telling the officers: “No, no, no. You sprayed me in the f**king eyes. You sprayed me in the eyes.”
Police officer witnessed kneeing man on floor in the head
As the officers tried to restrain the man our reporter witnessed an officer knee the man in the head, creating an audible thump. Later on after the incident our reporter saw what appeared to be a bite mark on an officer’s arm, but we did not witness a bite.
One of the officers then moved the woman away, pushing her towards the ground. This happened as support arrived in the form of a marked police car, two vans, and around a dozen officers. By around 11:15am the man had been arrested, handcuffed and restrained by the legs, and put in the back of a police van.
Police at the scene told MyLondon the man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage on the door, and on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker. MyLondon understands the initial arrest was triggered by an alleged common assault, attributed to the water spraying.
As a crowd of bystanders gathered around holding up phones, one man told officers: “You’re f**king animals… You filthy rotten c**ts.” Another woman called it: “Institutional racism… Prejudice.”
Police at the scene asked members of the public to move back, but did not stop anyone filming. The Met Police have been approached for comment.
