A knifeman who stabbed two men in a random frenzied attack at a south London Tube station has been found guilty after a British Transport Police investigation.
The court heard how Nicholas Orlando Green, 36, of Kennington Park Road, carried out the horrific attack at Kennington Underground station on March 27 this year.
Two men, aged 44 and 42, had just finished a local dance class and were waiting on separate platforms when Green tapped into the station. Moments later he launched a brutal “ferocious and unprovoked attack” 20-second assault on the older victim, stabbing him repeatedly even after he fell to the floor, police said.
When the second man rushed to help, Green turned on him; stabbing him 13 times before horrified passengers managed to step in. As he fled, Green assaulted a 31-year-old woman in a lift before leaving the station.
Both men were rushed to hospital. The 44-year-old suffered multiple stab wounds to his chest and a fractured arm, while the other victim also needed emergency treatment for his 13 injuries.
Detectives tracked Green down the next day after identifying him from the bank card he used to tap into the station. A search of his home uncovered his trainers, freshly washed jacket, and the card itself. During police interviews Green repeatedly ‘laughed, lied, argued’, police said.
He was convicted at Inner London Crown Court today (1 September) of two counts of GBH with intent, as well as possession of a blade and common assault. He was cleared of two counts of attempted murder and one of sexual assault.
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Attwell branded the incident “a truly horrific attack”. He said: “This was a truly horrific and unprovoked attack that left two innocent men with life-altering physical and psychological injuries that they continue to recover from.
“Green’s torrent of violence that day has never been satisfactorily explained. During police interviews Green repeatedly laughed, lied, argued and tried to frustrate our investigation as much as he could, but our officers worked tirelessly to gather crucial evidence that helped the jury see through his lies and bring him to justice.
“I hope this outcome brings some measure of justice and reassurance to the victims and their loved ones. We will stop at nothing to ensure violent offenders like Green are held to account and removed from the streets.”
Green has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced in early December.
