A legendary musician surprised members of the public with a shock appearance at an open mic night in Brighton, taking to the stage for the first time in four years
Music lovers attending an open mic night in Brighton were in for an unexpected surprise when a very famous musician took to the stage. The event was held at The Neptune Inn on Hove’s Victoria Terrace – a traditional old boozer and a well-known haven for live music.
And the crowd were stunned when a bone fide guitar hero made his way to the front. Pink Floyd legend David Gilmour made a surprise appearance after “crashing” his daughter Romany Gilmour’s performance.
Together, father and daughter played a handful of Pink Floyd songs including Breathe (In The Air), Time, and Breathe (Reprise). Those in attendance were also stunned to hear The Dark Side of the Moon songs played out in the longstanding venue last year, with David later revealing the performance was part of a warm-up tour ahead of his UK tour. He wrote: “Very much enjoyed crashing @GilmourRomany’s gig at the Neptune in Hove this evening after finishing tour rehearsals…”

Fans were delighted with the performance – and incredibly jealous of those who happened to be attending the night. One wrote: “50 yards from my house and I decided to stay in and watch c**p on telly. FFS.”
Another added: “I love the Neptune! Stage a tad cramped but always a good night.” A third wrote: “Wow imagine just sitting in a local pub/bar and in walks Gilmour. Such a cool thing. Romany has such an amazing voice. Love this so much.”
Others were full of praise for Gilmour for taking time out of rehearsals to appear at the pub, with one writing: “A true musician! Willing to play stadiums as well as a tiny pub! Brilliant!”
The open mic night marked Gilmour’s first live performance since May 2020. He is not the first British artist to shock onlookers with a surprise appearance; earlier this year, Ed Sheeran gave an impromptu subway performance in New York
A video posted on X (formerly Twitter) quickly gained attention, showing Ed disguised in a black hoodie, large sunglasses, and a wig that completely hid his famous red hair. His “emo” look was completed with black cargo pants and a grey beanie.
Despite his undercover appearance, his distinctive voice and incredible talent were unmistakable, drawing in a crowd who happily sang along to his acoustic cover of Chappell Roan’s hit Pink Pony Club. One fan even wrote: ” Ed Sheeran disguised as an emo boy singing Chappell Roan in the subway, they really did this for me.”
