A man who suffered a severe head injury during a ‘fight’ at Ridley Road Market earlier this week remains in critical condition, police have confirmed. The 52-year-old was allegedly attacked at the Dalston market at around 7.15am on Wednesday, May 21.

He is still fighting for his life in hospital two days on, according to a statement issued this afternoon (Friday, May 23). Two men – aged 32 and 36 – were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder soon after the early morning incident.

They have since been bailed, pending further enquiries. A cordon was in place on the Dalston Kingsland side of Ridley Road Market for some time whilst an investigation was carried out.

The stalls remained open for business during this time. Detectives are now urging witnesses or anyone with information relevant to the alleged assault to come forward.

Reports should be made to 101, quoting 2442/21MAY.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Around 7:40am on Wednesday, May 21, officers attended Ridley Road, Hackney, alongside the London Ambulance Service, following reports of an altercation. A 52-year-old man was taken to hospital. His condition has been assessed as critical, and we await further updates.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 7.16am this morning (May 21) to reports of an injured person in Ridley Road, Hackney. We sent an ambulance crew, a paramedic in a fast response car and an incident response officer to the scene. We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London’s Air Ambulance.

ā€œWe treated a patient for a head injury and took him to a major trauma centre by road.ā€
