Winter Fuel Payments are normally available to everyone who is above state pension age in the UK – but this is changing so that only those on means-tested benefits are eligible
Martin Lewis’ MoneySavingExpert.com website has issued a “don’t stall, just call” warning to pensioners who could miss out on the Winter Fuel Payment.
Winter Fuel Payments are normally available to everyone who is above state pension age in the UK – but this is changing so that only those on means-tested benefits, including Pension Credit, are eligible. The update means around 10 million fewer pensions will be able to claim Winter Fuel Payments, which are worth up to £300.
In the latest MSE email, the team explained how more than 800,000 people are currently missing out on Pension Credit – and urged them to put in an application now so they can get the Winter Fuel Payment. MSE said: “We’ve long urged all lower-income pensioners to check if they’re due Pension Credit. Now it’s even more important.
“Yesterday, Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the up to £300/yr annual Winter Fuel Payment currently given to all pensioners in Eng & Wales will be restricted to only those on means-tested benefits – the main one for over-66s being Pension Credit. Yet there are 800,000+ over state pension age who are eligible but don’t claim.”
Pension Credit – what you need to know
Pension Credit tops up your weekly income to £218.15, or to £332.95 if you’re in a couple – this is known as the Guarantee Credit part of Pension Credit. Your income normally needs to be below these amounts to be eligible – but in some cases, you might still be able to claim if you have a higher income and you have a severe disability, you’re a carer, or you have to pay housing costs, such as a mortgage.
If you reached State Pension age before April 6, 2016, or you have savings or a second pension, you may be eligible for the savings credit element of Pension Credit. This is worth £17.01 a week if you’re single, or £19.04 a week if you’re in a couple.
You might get additional payments if you’re a carer, severely disabled, or responsible for a child or young person. But as well as giving you extra cash, Pension Credit is also known as a gateway benefit for other money help.
For example, those who claim the main part of Pension Credit can get their council tax bill reduced. Other perks you may be entitled include a free TV licence if you’re over 75, the Warm Home Discount worth £150 each year, Cold Weather Payments, Housing Benefit, free dental treatment and vouchers for glasses or contact lenses.
