Meghan Markle made a surprise visit to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) as part of a literacy campaign, but broke a huge Royal Family rule in the process
Meghan Markle happily posed for photos as she made a surprise visit to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, but she broke a huge royal rule during her visit.
The Duchess of Sussex joined the hospital’s Make March Matter campaign last month as she read books to the children. Meghan was pictured laughing with the children as she read them books including Rosie the Riveter, Pete the Cat, and I Saw a Cat.
Meghan also took polaroid pictures with the kids, before happily signing her autograph on the sweet snaps. In doing so, however, she went against the rule which prevents members of the Royal Family from signing autographs.

The Princess of Wales explained the rule last year as she visited the Chelsea Flower Show’s inaugural Children’s Picnic. When Kate was asked to sign her name by one of the children, she replied: “I can’t write my name, but I can draw.”
When asked by a second pupil for an autograph, Princess Kate explained: “My name’s Catherine. I’m not allowed to write my signature, it’s just one of those rules.” Instead, she drew a picture of a flower, a tree and a pond with plants.
King Charles has also previously declined to sign an autograph, stating: “Sorry, they don’t allow me to do that.” It’s believed Royal Family members aren’t allowed to sign their autographs in order to prevent the risk of them being forged.
Meghan’s visit to the children’s hospital came as part of the CHLA’s Literally Healing reading programme, which gifts families at CHLA more than 65,000 books annually and provides a unique opportunity to promote literacy, as well as supporting patients’ families through additional therapeutic literary resources.
The former Suits star looked very elegant during the visit as she wore a floral Oscar De La Renta dress, featuring sheer sleeves. Meghan wore a face mask as she spoke with the children and styled her long brunette hair in loose waves,
She wore a stylish gold bracelet and dainty gold earrings. Meghan completed her look with a pair of black Aquazzura pumps.
