Prince Harry kisses Meghan Markle in Nigeria
Meghan Markle’s trip to Nigeria has had fashion fans swooning over her collection of chic, quiet luxury outfits, and one accessory in particular stood out – her sunglasses. Meghan opted for her go-to pair of Heidi Merrick ‘Santa Barbara’ Sunglasses In Black, £177 here, during the trip, which feature an oversized square shape with thick black rims and black lenses – perfect for keeping the African sun out of her eyes.
Meghan has been spotted wearing them on multiple occasions, and her latest sartorial styling has confirmed that they’re an absolute must-have for summer. Although we’d love to splurge on Meghan’s exact pair, if your budget isn’t stretching quite that far we’ve found a great affordable alternative thanks to Marks and Spencer’s Acetate Square Preppy Sunglasses, £39.50 here.
The M&S shades hail from the brand’s Autograph line, which is all about offering premium investment pieces at a more affordable price point. Just like Meghan’s Heidi Merrick pair, the M&S sunnies have an oversized square shape with a thick black acetate frame and black lenses.
The lenses in both pairs offer 100% UV protection from the sun, making them an ideal pick for any upcoming holidays abroad (or even just to prepare for the British sunshine). The M&S lenses are also polarised to help block out glare and reduce the eye strain that can come with bright, overexposed locations.
The frames are individually hand-finished to ensure top quality, and have metal core inserts that makes them fit comfortably on your face for long periods of time. If the all-black colourway isn’t for you, you can also pick them up in a black and brown tortoiseshell design with brown lenses instead.
The sunnies are new to the M&S website so have only acquired one review so far which said: “I ordered these online and was shocked at how HUGE they are. A lovely pair of sunglasses that feel good quality but my god they are massive.”
If you’re looking to follow in Meghan’s sartorial footsteps then the oversized style will be just what you’re looking for. However if you want something slightly more pared down, the H&M Cat Eye Sunglasses, £9.99 here, are a great alternative.
The high street shades have a similar square frame, however they have a slightly angled outer corner which gives them more of a cat-eye style design. One shopper said: “Nice, good if you want the ‘big sunglasses look’ but also not too big that it looks over the top, seems good quality for price. To note that even through the lens is dark people can still see your eyes more than average sunglasses but overall it’s okay.”
Another wrote: “Excellent quality. Do not look cheap at all! Always struggle to find sunglasses that suit me and these are so flattering! Look more expensive than they are. Absolutely recommend!”
