A “lighthearted” mishap in an “otherwise formal” event once left Melania Trump and Queen Camilla in stitches. In her self-titled 2024 memoir, the First Lady, who is currently in the UK with her husband, US President Donald Trump, for an unprecedented second state visit, opened up about a previous trip to meet the late Queen Elizabeth II.
She noted that they’d met the Queen one year previously at Windsor Castle, where they were offered “scones with jam” with Her Majesty while her “cherished” corgis “lounged at her feet”.
Melania admitted that she and her husband were “delighted” to meet the monarch again, before proceeding to share details about the couple’s first state visit at Buckingham Palace, describing it as “truly unforgettable”.
She wrote: “Donald and I landed in Marine One on the perfectly manicured grounds and were greeted by Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, who escorted us to the entrance where Her Majesty the Queen awaited.”
She continued: “Amid the pomp of the ceremonial welcome by British guards, a sudden gust of wind ruffled my hat. I quickly grabbed at it to hold it in place and shared an unrestrained moment of laughter with the Queen and the Duchess.
“It was a lighthearted and spontaneous moment in an otherwise formal and dignified occasion.”
Melania detailed her experience inside the “resplendent” palace, where the Trumps were treated to a guided tour of the royal collection, with attention paid particularly to artefacts of US significance.
They went on to enjoy a state banquet at which Melania was seated next to Charles, who apparently used the opportunity to share his passion for “environmental conservation”.
The Trumps followed this by holding an “intimate dinner” in honour of Charles and Camilla at the residence of the US ambassador.
Melania’s appearance at the 2025 state visit, meanwhile, has led to a slightly more unusual headline about her fashion choices. In fact, the bizarre story involves speculation about her using a body double.
The First Lady opted to wear an eye-catching black outfit and a rather large hat. Yet, it seems a theory has emerged on social media. One person on X posted: “The fake Melania always wears those big sunglasses …”
Another said: “@WhiteHouse Is this the real Melania or one of the doubles?” A third person posted: “Melania and her stupid hats. That woman can’t handle eye contact.”
During the visit, the Trumps were greeted by the Prince and Princess of Wales, followed by King Charles and Queen Camilla, in front of Victoria House after they landed in the presidential helicopter.
As part of the proceedings, they visited St George’s Chapel and were met by the Dean of Windsor, the Right Reverend Christopher Cocksworth, and Chapter Clerk Charlotte Manley.
In a mark of respect to Queen Elizabeth, they laid a wreath at the tomb of the late monarch.
