With London’s temperatures set to soar back above 30C by the end of this week, commuters may find themselves struggling with extra hot and stuffy conditions on the Tube. The Met Office has confirmed a third heatwave, with highs of 32C expected to bake the South East of England by this weekend.
This means commuters relying on buses, trains and the already often warm Underground could find themselves in potentially uncomfortable circumstances this week, which might affect their health.
The Met Office advises people travelling through busy transport hubs to prioritise carrying a water bottle, along with a small handheld fan to help move the stifling air around, reports the Mirror.
The Met Office’s health guidance, issued alongside the UKHSA, states: “The heat can affect your health and make you feel unwell, there are many simple things you can do to keep yourself safe. Make the most of the weather by staying well whilst using public transport.”
Keeping cool
Whether you’re meeting mates or heading to the office, one key factor in coping with the heat is your choice of clothing. The Met Office suggests dressing in comfortable, lightweight clothing, opting for breathable fabrics in pale colours.
Passengers who start feeling unwell from the heat on public transport are advised to disembark at the next stop for a breath of fresh air.
During the peak heat hours of 11am to 3pm, when temperatures soar, people should seek shade and avoid direct sunlight. For those who can’t avoid being out in the sun, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and slathering on sunscreen is recommended.
Transport for London (TfL) has reminded Tube travellers to “look out for each other while travelling” and supports the Met Office’s advice to always carry water during these hot spells.
