London could be hit by frequent rain throughout September
As summer continues to wind down the Met Office has warned thunderstorms could be on the way. London is set to experience unsettled weather this week with a mix of sun, cloud and rain until the weekend with temperatures hovering around 20C.
Forecasters say this unpredictable weather, which often comes with heavy rain, is due to a series of low-pressure systems which are affecting the UK.
The Met Office long range prediction for the week between September 13-22 reads: “A deep low likely crosses the country later on the weekend clearing early next week bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Following this a return to showers with periods of longer spells of rain is likely.
“Thunderstorms and hail are also possible, as are some spells of strong winds, especially if further deeper lows affect the UK.” Towards the end of that period forecasters add that we could experience drier and more settled conditions, particularly around London and the south of England.
Will London be hit by Storm Amy?
Wednesday (September 10) will be a broadly wet day as a new area of low-pressure approaches from the Atlantic Ocean. Northern and western parts of the country will be most impacted by this, but London is still expected to experience heavy showers.
Towards the weekend, the Met Office said it’s keeping an eye on Storm Amy, the first of the new 2025/2026 storm season, to see if it will affect the UK.
Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tom Crabtree explains: “We are keeping an eye on a deepening area of low-pressure which will develop over the North Atlantic during the coming days and might bring impactful weather to the UK, most likely on Sunday and Monday.
“At present, it’s too early to say the precise impact this might have on the weather, but it’s likely to bring widespread heavy rain and strong winds, most probably to the north of the UK.
“We are closely monitoring what the various computer models are suggesting and will keep people updated as our forecasts evolve over the next few days.”
