Met Office gives verdict on London heatwave as temperatures to rise to 30C

London will be hotter than parts of Ibiza and Barcelona this week as temperatures are set to soar to 30C. The UK’s national forecaster predicts that this Saturday (June 21) will be 30C in Kew Gardens, which reported the hottest start to May ever earlier this year.

The heat this week will be leaving many of us feeling sluggish, so it’s important to make sure we’ve been drinking plenty of water. But it’s worth noting that The Met Office has not issued a weather warning regarding heat.

The Deputy Chief Meteorologist said: “The rising temperatures this week are a combination of several factors. Over the next few days, settled weather and warm sunshine will allow temperatures to rise day on day.

“Temperatures will then rise further towards the end of the week as winds turn more southerly and even warmer air over continental Europe will be drawn across the UK. We could very well see several places exceeding 30ºC, which will be the highest temperatures of the year so far.”

Hayfever sufferers will also be dismayed to learn that from today (Monday, June 16) up until Friday (June 20) there will be a ‘Very High’ pollen count. Any questions you may have about the upcoming searing heat can be found answered below.

What is this week’s forecast?

  • Today (Monday, June 16) – H26C L15C, sunny intervals.

  • Tuesday, June 17 – H27C L16C, sunny.

  • Wednesday, June 18 – H27C L17C, sunny.

  • Thursday, June 19 – H28C L17C, sunny.

  • Saturday, June 21 – H30C L18C, sunny.

  • Sunday, June 22 – H28C L17C, sunny intervals.

Is this a heatwave?

Temperatures have to exceed 25C for three days on the trot for it to be a heatwave, so yeah, it’s going to be a heatwave, and a long one at that.

How long will the hot weather last?

Although The Met Office’s immediate forecast lasts until Sunday, the BBC ’s stretches until the end of next week – and it’s looking very promising (provided you don’t hate the hot weather). Forecasters at the BBC predict next Monday (June 23) to also be 30C, and the rest of next week to range between 26C and 29C.
