London is set to be hit by thunderstorms this Friday while temperatures soar to 27C. But better weather is on the horizon as warmer temperatures are forecast to continue for the foreseeable.
A yellow weather warning is in place over London from 3pm on Friday afternoon, until 6am on Saturday morning. The warning will affect large parts of the capital, although the further west the less likely people will be to get caught out by the rain.
The warning covers much of the South East – all the way to the edge of the coast past Norwich, down towards Chichester. The Met Office has warned that the storms could bring disruption such as difficult driving conditions and road closures. There may also be some delays and cancellations to train and bus services. Power cuts are also possible, as well as flooding.
A yellow heat-health alert has also been issued by the UK Health Security Agency which will be in place 9pm on Thursday 12 June to 8am on Sunday 15 June and covers the East of England, East Midlands, London and South East regions. The warning could mean that there is an an increased use of health care services by vulnerable populations.
Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wisson said; “By Friday afternoon and evening, heavy and thundery showers are likely to spread across Southeastern England and East Anglia, tracking north-eastwards overnight. There is currently some uncertainty around the exact location and intensity of the thunderstorms, but there is a risk that some areas could see 30 to 50mm of rain, with a risk of even larger accumulations possible.
“With much of the rain falling in a short space of time there is a risk of impacts such as surface water flooding. Frequent lightning, gusty winds and hail could pose additional hazards. Updates to this warning are expected as confidence increases on the exact location of the greatest risk of the heaviest downpours.”
Temperatures are set to rise this week, with Friday (June 13) seeing highs of 27C. These will then settle around the mid-20s until Tuesday, June 17, according to the Met Office.
