London is being gripped by its fourth heatwave of the summer, which sent temperatures soaring to 33C earlier this week. Friday, August 15 will be the last day as the mercury peaks at 30C, but Londoners are still expected to enjoy mostly sunny days in the mid 20s for the rest of the month.
This trend has been down to the UK drawing in very warm air from continental Europe where temperatures have been particularly hot. The Met Office says the high pressure causing this will be increasingly displaced to the north over the next fortnight, leaving the door open to strong winds and rain moving in from the Atlantic.
Forecasters have raised a big question mark over the behaviour of Tropical Storm Erin which is currently barrelling toward Puerto Rico. If it progresses into the North Atlantic the storm could make an impact on weather conditions in London and the rest of the UK.
The Met Office long range prediction for Friday, August 29 to Friday, September 12 reads: “Overall, unsettled conditions with showers or longer spells of rain are expected to be most prevalent. Some heavy and thundery rain is possible at times with a risk of strong winds.”
Despite this, experts say there should be periods of drier and more settled weather during this, while southern England could still experience warm and hot weather spells.
