Wind gusts are set to reach 46mph in London this weekend

The UK is set to be battered by torrential rain and strong winds as the remnants of Hurricane Humberto barrel across the Atlantic Ocean. Some parts of the country could experience 250mm of rain over the next few days as forecasters have warned there is a chance of flooding.

This will mostly hit Scotland and northern parts of England, but the weather is also expected to turn further south. After a rather sunny and settled end to September the Met Office has forecast rain for the entirety of Friday, October 3.

Conditions will improve on Saturday, October 4 with a mix of sunny and overcast spells, but the wind is expected to pick up throughout the day. By 10am wind gusts are expected to reach 41mph and will go on to peak at 46mph by 2pm.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Chris Bulmer said: “Rain will be particularly persistent in western Scotland from Wednesday onwards, with the heaviest rain over hills and mountains, though pulses of heavier rain will extend more widely at times, during Thursday in particular.

“From later Wednesday through to Friday morning, 50-75mm of rain is expected across a wide area, with in excess of 100mm possible over west-facing mountains. Wind is an accompanying hazard from late on Thursday, with this initially most likely in exposed western coasts.”

The unsettled weather this weekend is also influenced by the remnants of Hurricane Imelda. Mr Bulmer continued: ““The situation becomes more complex later in the week as tropical cyclones Humberto and Imelda, currently over the southwest Atlantic, influence our weather, increasing the risk of a deep low developing near the UK.

“If this materialises, we could see some very strong winds as well as further heavy rainfall Friday into Saturday, but at this time the development and track of this system remains uncertain. We’re monitoring this closely.”

Temperatures will remain warmer than average this week with highs of 20C on Thursday, October 2. During the rest of the week the mercury should hover between 17C and 18C.
